# How to Switch From Desktop OBS to IRL Without Ending Your Stream The host finishes the desktop intro, grabs a bag, and says, ‘Okay, let’s go.’ That is where a lot of streams accidentally become two broadcasts. Desktop OBS stops. The phone starts. Twitch or YouTube gets a fresh connection, a new delay, a new title problem, and a chat full of people asking whether the stream died. A persistent cloud program changes the handoff. Instead of treating desktop and phone as two competing broadcasters, treat both as sources inside one program. Desktop OBS feeds a StreamableRun ingest. The phone or mobile encoder feeds another. Cloud Hosted OBS stays connected to the destinations and moves the public program from one source to the other. The backup can be another phone, a producer camera, or a simple holding scene; it needs to be clear enough to use if the planned field source is not ready. Do not rely on a source label such as ‘iPhone final new.’ Use names a producer can understand while someone is talking in their ear. Create five scenes. The desk scene contains local OBS and any desk-only overlays. The handoff scene is a short transition with no live field audio. The field-return scene is clean: field camera, field audio, and only necessary graphics. The holding scene says the field feed is reconnecting without inventing a countdown. The rollback scene returns to the desk source or a safe backup. A private monitor view can show all sources and notes, but it must never be selectable as program. Check that the holding scene has its own safe audio and cannot accidentally carry a private desk conversation. ## Five minutes before the handoff: make the escape routes real The field source may be present and still not be ready. Mark a simple rule: if the producer cannot hear and see the phone clearly in preview, do not take it live. Keep desktop OBS on air, tell viewers the show is moving outside, and solve the field issue off-program. The point of a cloud program is that the crew can wait without forcing the platforms to wait. Prepare rollback in both directions. If the phone drops immediately after the cut, take the holding scene first; do not smash back to desktop audio while the host is still talking. If the host is only steps away and desktop OBS remains healthy, return to the rollback scene, recheck the field source in preview, and try again later. If desktop OBS fails during the staging process, take the holding scene or backup source while the producer decides whether the field feed is sufficient to become the main program. Write the actual cue in the run sheet: ‘Producer takes handoff; host waits for return cue; producer confirms audio; producer takes field.’ This avoids the common failure where the host begins an outdoor introduction while viewers are still looking at the desktop scene. ## The live handoff: a short, deliberate sequence 1. Keep DESK OBS on air while FIELD PHONE is already delivering to preview. 2. The host says the final desk line. The producer takes the handoff scene or a brief desk-safe transition; mute the desk mic if the host is leaving the room. 3. Confirm the field source once more in preview: current frame, correct camera, intelligible microphone, and no private conversation. 4. Take the field-return scene. The destinations remain connected to the Cloud Hosted OBS program, so this is a source change rather than a brand-new platform broadcast. 5. The moderator watches public playback and reports only the outcome: field video good, audio low, vertical crop wrong, or one destination unhealthy. The producer makes one targeted correction instead of guessing from chat. 6. Keep DESK OBS alive for a few minutes if the computer and local connection allow it. It is a possible rollback, not dead weight. The cadence matters. The host should not be asked to fiddle with an encoder while crossing a street. The producer should not need to message a moving host for a stream key. The platform session should not be an extra thing every person has to worry about. ## Outside: use the cloud control panel as a handoff desk Once the host is moving, Cloud Hosted OBS becomes the stable desk. The cloud program is strongest when it buys the crew time to make an intentional decision, not when it encourages them to force a broken field source back on air. ## The return trip is a second handoff Creators often rehearse leaving the desk and forget coming home. The return is where desktop alerts, browser sources, and local audio may have changed state. Bring DESK OBS back to its ingest before the producer needs it. Preview it. Confirm that the desktop scene still has the correct mic, camera, and graphics. Then use the same structure in reverse: field remains on air, the producer takes a short transition or holding scene, desktop is checked privately, and the desk scene returns only when it is ready. Do not cut to a desktop screen that is showing a private browser tab, a login prompt, or a muted microphone. The public stream stays continuous because the cloud program remains the destination-facing encoder throughout. ## Why this is better than a direct stop-and-start Directly switching from local OBS to a phone is sometimes acceptable for a casual stream. It is simple, and a solo creator may prefer the smaller setup. The tradeoff is visible: each source is responsible for a new platform connection and its own output state.
