Use USB Video Class, usually called UVC, for a single camera close to the OBS computer when a direct cable is practical and the show benefits from the smallest possible fault domain. Use NDI HX when a camera needs to live on a managed network, travel farther than a sensible USB run, feed more than one destination, or accept IP-style control and routing. Neither approach is automatically more professional; each moves the failure point to a different place.

UVC makes a camera behave like a local video device
USB-IF publishes the USB Video Class specification family, and Microsoft documents its inbox UVC driver implementation. In practical streaming terms, a compliant camera or capture device appears to the host as a video source that OBS can select. That directness is powerful: camera, cable, computer, and software are all in one visible chain. A host can often diagnose a missing image by checking power, the cable, the selected device, and the USB port.
The connector is not the complete specification. USB-C describes a physical connector, not guaranteed data capability, power behavior, or cable quality. A device may expose different formats at USB 2 and USB 3, and a hub may compete with storage, audio, or another camera. Connect the camera directly for initial validation. Once it works, add the exact hub or extension only if the complete show still runs cleanly.
NDI HX moves the camera into the network design
NDI’s documentation distinguishes NDI HX from its higher-bandwidth variants and describes NDI 6 capabilities including HDR support for specified sender and receiver modes. NDI HX is typically the more compressed IP-camera choice: it can be useful where cable routing, switch placement, and remote production matter more than treating each source as a directly attached webcam. Its value is not that it makes the network disappear. It makes the network part of the camera path.
That means a camera must have reliable power, a supported NDI mode, an addressable network path, and receiver software or hardware that supports the planned output. Discovery is convenient during setup but not enough for a show plan. Write down the camera name, IP reservation where appropriate, switch port, VLAN or network segment, power method, video mode, and receiver. A crew should not have to scan a crowded network and guess which camera is Program Two.
Bandwidth and Wi-Fi deserve a real budget
With UVC, the primary transport is the USB link; the computer still has to decode or receive the selected format and OBS still has to render and encode the complete show. With NDI HX, the camera traffic shares a network with other devices unless it has a deliberate segment. A headline Wi-Fi speed says little about contention, roaming, multicast behavior, walls, or the behavior of several cameras at once. Use wired Ethernet for fixed critical cameras whenever the design allows it.
Make a budget before adding sources. List every camera mode, expected network link, switch capacity, computer NIC, monitor feed, recording target, and return feed. Then run all of them while the program is live in a private test. Watch CPU, GPU, render lag, network utilization, audio sync, and source stability. If an NDI camera is valuable only when its Wi-Fi path works perfectly, it is not a safe primary program source without a backup.
Video format matching avoids most mysterious failures
Pick a real program standard before selecting UVC or NDI settings: for example, 1080p30 for a talk show or 1080p60 for fast movement where the rest of the production can sustain it. OBS recommends matching a desired output frame rate and setting canvas and output resolutions deliberately. A camera that can record 4K does not require the live pipeline to ingest, composite, and distribute 4K. More pixels can add decode, transport, and scaling work without improving the public stream.
Set each camera to the planned frame rate, create a private scene with a visible timer, and compare it against a program reference. Watch for frame-rate conversion, a color-space surprise, cropped framing, or audio drift after ten minutes. Do not mix random device-default modes just because every source appears. A smaller set of matched sources gives a producer a clearer diagnosis when a frame starts skipping.
Control and placement are reasons to choose NDI HX
An IP camera can be easier to place across a studio, venue, or remote room because its video path can follow network infrastructure instead of a short USB cable. NDI documentation also describes camera and device ecosystems with support varying by model. That can be a real gain for a multi-camera room, especially when the team has an existing managed switch, documented ports, and a person who understands the network. It is not a shortcut for an improvised venue network.
A direct UVC camera can still be the correct choice for a fixed desk, a guest camera beside the host, or an emergency close-up. Its cable limits are often a feature: the operator can see the entire path. If the show needs pan, tilt, control, remote shading, or sources in several rooms, evaluate IP tools. If it only needs a reliable face camera on a single computer, the extra network layer may simply create more ways to be wrong.
Build a fallback around the failure you expect
For UVC, keep a tested spare cable, an alternate host port, and a simple scene that can use a second camera or a static card. For NDI HX, keep a documented direct camera address or recovery procedure, a spare switch port or known network profile, and a way to cut away without exposing an empty source. Do not let a fallback depend on the same untested Wi-Fi bridge or power strip that caused the primary failure.
Rehearse a failure before the show: pull the camera cable, restart the camera, disconnect the network path, and make the operator use the fallback. Note the correct order of recovery. A source that reconnects in an unfamiliar way can be more disruptive than a source that fails cleanly. Save the OBS scene collection and label emergency scenes so a second person can keep program moving while the technical path is repaired.
The purchase decision
Buy into UVC when the camera is near its host, a direct cable is physically easy, and one local computer owns the production. Buy into NDI HX when its camera placement, routing, and control advantages solve a real multi-room or multi-camera requirement and the network has been designed for it. Do not decide only by a camera’s protocol badge. Check whether its exact NDI mode, UVC format, control, firmware, and receiver software are supported together.
Before event day, run a full-duration local recording and a private stream with every source, audio feed, overlay, and destination profile active. Restart the cameras and host, repeat the test, and record the working settings. The correct camera transport is the one that delivers a stable, properly framed image through the conditions the production will actually face.
Document the source before handing it off
Put a small label on every camera and cable, then save a shared note with the camera name, transport, expected mode, host port or switch port, power source, and fallback scene. For UVC, include the exact cable and any required adapter. For NDI HX, include the current network name, IP or discovery identity, receiver application, and control method. This is not bureaucracy. It prevents a simple replacement or restart from becoming a fresh investigation during a live program.
When an update is necessary, make it a separate rehearsal. Update one camera or one host component, capture a short test recording, and confirm the source still returns after a reboot. If a show uses a remote producer, give that person the same source map. A transport choice is operationally sound only when more than the original builder understands how its video reaches program.
